what is a dental crown?

A dental crown is a customized tooth crown that is designed to prevent further decay and support tooth structure. This restorative piece fully covers the entire tooth above the gumline. Depending on the materials used, a dental crown can be matched to your natural tooth color and blends in seamlessly with the rest of your smile. With proper care, dental crowns can last up to 15 years or longer.

dental crown placement

The process of getting a dental crown takes place over a series of appointments. There is a bit of variation in the process depending on if your dental crown is being placed over a natural tooth or a dental implant. Once a treatment plan for a dental crown has been established, we’ll either shape your natural tooth to accommodate a crown or move forward with surgically placing dental implants.

Due to the custom fit of a dental crown, impressions will be taken and sent to a lab before your final crown is ready to be placed. To protect your tooth, a temporary crown may be placed while you wait for the final version to come in. Once your final crown has arrived, it will be permanently attached and inspected for comfort and fit. A follow-up appointment may be scheduled to see how you’re adjusting to the new restoration.
