There are many similarities between orthodontists and dentists. Both are committed to improving oral health in their patients, but you’ll learn that it’s in different ways.

Dentists primarily deal with care of the teeth, gums, nerves, and the jaw.

Orthodontists, however, are dental specialists who focus solely on correcting bites, teeth alignment, and teeth straightening.

Braces have come a long way over the last 20-30 years, yet metal braces are still very commonly used. As of 2019, there are two types: lingual and traditional braces. Here’s a brief overview of each, and why a patient may want one type of braces over the other.

Traditional braces:  These braces are popular among young people, especially teens, and are the least expensive orthodontic option. They’re famous for giving people a “metal mouth” appearance because metal brackets and wires are placed on the front of the teeth.

There are also what’s called ceramic braces — which have brackets that are clear or tooth-colored.

Lingual braces: There’s no metal mouth appearance with these because lingual braces are placed against the back of the teeth (also known as the lingual surface) out of view. Metal brackets and wires are still used, but are hardly noticeable, providing a more discreet experience.

Fortunately for people who want to avoid a mouthful of metal or ceramic brackets, there is an alternative called Invisalign.

Invisalign allows you to get the straight, gorgeous smile you have always wanted, while allowing you to avoid those unsightly metal brackets.

With Invisalign, you use a series of trays that shift your teeth into the location that is best for them to be in. Each tray moves the teeth slightly more, and the final trays are meant to hold your teeth in place and let them stop shifting.  Invisalign clear braces are typically much less painful than traditional braces, as well.

Invisalign patients wear the invisible aligners for 20 to 22 hours a day, and then swap them out for a new set every two weeks. The exciting part of moving through the series of aligners is that patients can see clearly how much progress their teeth have made in the straightening process over time – the best part is that it was all on your terms.

A typical Invisalign treatment cycle lasts, on average, one year.

Advantages of Alignment by Invisalign

Invisalign goes to work immediately to correct teeth. Here are other benefits we hear from our Invisalign patients:

  • The aesthetics of Invisalign are far preferred over the look of traditional braces
  • Invisalign can be removed to eat and brush teeth
  • Invisalign requires fewer visits to the dentist, since you get numerous trays at once
  • There are no metal brackets or wires to hurt your mouth and insides of your cheeks when wearing Invisalign
  • Invisalign typically takes only about 12-18 months to treat, whereas traditional braces can take up to two years
